In this month of May when we celebrate mothers I’m thrilled that we get to celebrate our mother twice, since mum just happens to have her birthday in this month too – today in fact. And it’s only since I became a mother thirteen years ago that I appreciate the importance of this role which so often goes unrewarded, is definitely underpaid and for all the stuff written about it, has no specific formula or guidelines on how to best do it. I’ve found more often than not it’s a “wing and a prayer” exercise that can crown or crucify you from one moment to the next. Still I don’t know too many mothers who would trade a single sleepless night; the sour smell of vomit; a sloppy, bubble kiss; a clingy hand on the first day of school and the myriad of tender and challenging moments for all the gold of King Midas. I think Beverly Jones hits the nail on the head when she says:
“now, as always, the most automated appliance in a household is the mother”
So as I wish my dear mother a HAPPY BIRTHDAY today here’s a shout out to all mothers the world over
“As long as mama’s love underpins everything, even your worst day is a good day, for nothing can make it better like a mama’s love”
Happy mother’s month…we deserve the whole month, not just the one day. I, for one, am celebrating being a mum for the entire month……anyone else want to join me?
