The Force

Must be something about that unseen, ubiquitous power and how it seems to flow and communicate ever powerfully when one needs it the most. We call it by so many names: energy, prana, life force, universal flow and if you’re a Star Wars fan ‘The Force’.
Even the non-believers can’t sometimes explain how certain connections, coincidences and serendipitous events occur. How some things are so synchronous you’d swear they’re being perfectly orchestrated by a master scheduler or organiser. If we pay even the slightest attention to this unseen ‘Force’ we will soon see how powerfully it works to bring us everything we need at any given time.
We might not always like how experiences manifest at the hands of ‘The Force’, but will almost always get the lessons or wisdom behind its perfectly timed delivery.
This past week in particular I’ve had emails, phone chats or face-to-face conversations either start or end with cryptic phrases like ‘let go and let flow’; ‘universal power is all around you…trust’ and my Star Wars favourite ‘may the Force be with you’
And I finally got around to seeing the original Star Wars trilogy (bucket list items I’ve been meaning to tick off for the longest time). Coincidence that it occurred this week, along with all the cryptic phrases reminding me to stay connected to the flow of life? I think not. My favourite scene is when Yoda uses the Force to raise Luke’s ship from the swamp it was stuck in and Luke stares in disbelief and utters the word ‘unbelievable’. Yoda’s quiet response is ‘and that is why you fail’.
In the end anything and everything comes down to our belief. We either believe or we don’t, either way we’re going to get exactly what we believe or don’t. And I’ve found that awareness of and connecting to the Force has yielded more moments of wonder than clinging to the black hole of doubt, mistrust and cynicism.

Flow and Grow

What is it about human nature that it has such an incessant desire to control despite the many life experiences, words of wisdom and spiritual teachings that continue to show us there is little, apart from our own attitudes, that we ever get to control? Yet still we continue to mount that ever steep hill of control. I wonder what stars and planets are crossing or if the impending full moon is carrying a particularly heightened “control freak” energy because this seems to be the time for “control freakish” behaviour or can I go so far as to say just “freakish” behaviour.

Whatever it is I hope it passes soon. It’s all around – at work, at malls, in my community and in my own mind too. I’ve seen it all – outbursts, tantrums, frustrations, tears and anger – all in a bid to keep things going in a pre planned, rigid and particular way, allowing little or no room for any diversions or changes. The only thing we accomplish in the end is driving everyone around us nuts.

Let’s face it – even if our rational, trained minds have become so far removed from nature’s inherent essence of flow and grow, our Spirits haven’t. The more we try to control those around us, eventually the Spirit of the person kicks in and has and will always rebel against being controlled because that’s against its nature. So perhaps a moment to ponder on the wisdom of Epictetus and remember to “seek not the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are and you will have a tranquil flow of life.”
